How to get stereo mix

Most sound cards these days come with such features as stereo mix. Stereo mix is an option which allows the user to record sounds coming from the computer. For example, if you are listening to some music, then it will be recorded. Stereo mix is a way for the user to record whatever sounds he or she wants without having to use a microphone for it. So, how do you get stereo mix? To enable stereo mix, simply follow these instructions:

Instructions
  1. Double click on the volume icon at the bottom right hand corner
  2. Click Options
  3. Click Properties
  4. Click 'Recording'
  5. Check Stereo Mix and check all the others
  6. Now, mute all the other options besides Stereo Mix
  7. Adjust the volume of the Stereo Mix since it can be too loud
  8. Test it out
Issues
Sometimes, a user adjusts the volume of the stereo mix too high which in turn causes terrible quality to be played back. What you have to take into consideration is that Stereo Mix records the sound fully. What I mean by this is that like your speakers which have volume adjustment, they playback the sound fully. If you crank up the volume too high on your speakers, you are not going to get good quality played back, but if you set it to appropirate amount, then it should play back good quality.

...That's nice if you have a brand of soundcard and notebook/PC that allow you to reach that conclusion.

If you have a Sony VAIO with RealTek HD Audio plus Windows Vista, then you can search all the setting you want; the function is disabled at the hardware level.

On some computers you are not given the option to "enable": eg.

It's not just Sony. I have the exact same issue with Vista on an Acer Aspire. It's a real pain in the backside if you happen to need to record something.
